Mario Mason and Alex Meade win National Titles!!
East Coast stars gone West have continued to make waves. This time as red shirt students at their respective Universities.
Mason just beat last year's ASICS Wrestler of the Year in Jason Chamberlain - who also was NHSCA Sr. National Champ last season - in the finals of FILA Jrs.
Meade was equally impressive by defeating last year's Jr. Hodge Award winner Jason Welch; he respresented the US at both Dream Team and Dapper Dan in 2008.
When both wrestlers take the mat next season for Minnie and Okie St., the expectations will be high. Both performing already at high levels will surely set the tone for good freshman campaigns in 2010. Mason and Meade have both won approximately 20 matches this season - add in GOLD Medal performances at FILA Jrs. in tough weights and the future looks bright. When the NCAAs hit Philadelphia in 2011 many expect they will be in the national title hunt, along with fellow coaster Jordan Oliver.
Last year Meade was again named ASICS First Team and went undefeated in his last two high school seasons. That included two Beast of the East titles and two Ironman titles. He also won both of his matches in the prestigious Dapper Dan and Dream Team events.
Mason began the season in 2008 as the #1 recruit overall. Instantly, an ankle injury suffered at ESU Open took the Blair star and made him vulnerable. Suffering early season losses to both Jon Burns and Vince Ramos set the senior's season back. Mason later defeated Ramos at NHSCA Sr's. in the final. He also went back to Fargo to defend his crown and was once again the winner after defeating St.John in straight sets in the final.
Meade has been beating nationally ranked high schoolers since he was a 14 yr. old frosh - Rollie Peterkin among them; additionally Mason has been wreaking havoc for nationally ranked opponents since his freshman season - J.Frishkorn was one of them - and nothing has changed. Both stars have been very consistant in beating the nation's finest competition and winning the nation's biggest events.
For argument's sake, Meade's biggest win to date may have been vs. Bubba Jenkins
Mason's most impressive win thus far was Kellen Russell.
2010 can't come soon enough. Good luck guys.
